I knew that it was doing well at film festivals so it was one that I was waiting to get released. I lucked out when I saw that at the Nightmares Film Festival it was showing for its regional premiere. It was one that I knew I was going to see for sure. The synopsis is a soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday cabin. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events takes place.
We start with a mother, Laura (Alicia Silverstone) at home with her two children. Her older son is Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and daughter Mia (Lia McHugh. She has a dollhouse which we learn is modeled after the cabin that they go during the winter. Laura calls her ex-husband, Richard (Richard Armitage) to bring the children over. She's making sure that his new girlfriend won't be there.
She was told that Grace (Riley Keough) wouldn't be, but we see a glimpse of her in a window and then Laura sees her sneaking out the back gate. Through some subtle things, we know that Laura wants to get back together with Richard and is devastated to learn that he plays to ask Grace to marry him. This leads to a traumatic event that rocks this family to the core.
Richard tries to get his children to come around to Grace, but they blame her for what happened. Through them snooping, we learn that Grace has a dark past as her father was the head of a cult and she is the only survivor. Richard tries to have her over for Thanksgiving, but the children lose their minds so he rethinks it.
This all leads to his plan for them to go up to the cabin for Christmas. He still has to work so his plan is to take them up, get them acclimated and then go back, forcing the three to work it out in isolation. There's definitely some awkwardness as Laura decorated the place and there's still things that belonged to her there. They do seem to be making progress until one morning, they wake up to everything they brought is now missing.
Now since this is still a film that hasn't been released just yet and still making the rounds, I wanted to give as much a recap without spoiling anything. I will say that this film definitely lived up to the hype for me. It is such a haunting tale that has a feel of something like Hereditary or Midsommar.
There's an interesting family dynamics here. We have children who are living in broken homes after their parents divorced. They want them to get back together, which is exactly what Laura wants as well. Richard has moved on though. Grace is interesting as I feel like she's a little bit awkward due to her past. Being raised in a cult, she has lasting effects from it.
That's what I really want to delve into next is the religious aspect here. The cult Grace was in was religious based. They took it to the extreme. When they get to the cabin, there's a creepy picture of a nun that looks stern as well as a giant cross. Grace is now at the least agnostic due to the trauma. As she descends into madness, her religious history flares up, which I find quite intriguing.
This film also flirts with is what happening supernatural or is it really happening. I really dug this mystery if I'm going to be perfectly honest. The morning they wake up and everything was before they got there freaked me out. Then every time Grace looks at a certain clock that shows the date, it keeps going back to the same one. This is unnerving and makes her start to think they could have died and are in purgatory. Now this is I guess is a bit of spoiler, but there's a journey to figure out the truth.
That takes me to the pacing of this one, which the runtime clocks in at 100 minutes. I heard the saying that 90 minutes and below are free, anything over that you really have to prove to me it needs to be there. I completely think this film needed that extra time. There was a couple times my jaw actually dropped in shock. I was sucked into this film and trying to figure out what happened. There were things I even missed that were shared with me later that made me like this one even more. With that said, I thought it was paced very well and I like how it ended as I'm down for bleak endings.
Moving to the acting of the film, it is definitely on point. Keough was great as the lead here. I love how subdued she plays the character, but as things around her start to break down we see her descend into madness. She's mentally disturbed from her past and with the stress, we see her reverting. It had me hooked to see. Martell and McHugh did really well as the children also. Martell was made famous from the two It movies but I have to say I'm quite impressed with him for his age. Silverstone and Armitage are solid in support here as well.
As for the effects of the film, we really don't need a lot of them as it isn't that type of film. To be honest though, the realism of them being stranded in this cabin felt real. We do get some practical things later on that looked good. If anything though, this film is shot very well and I was impressed by that for sure.
Now with that aside, despite my high expectations, I felt that this one lived up to them. It is such a haunting film of loss and I really like how they incorporate that this could be supernatural or that it could not be. It is done in a way that doesn't feel like a cheat as well, as we see little hints along the way. The pacing works to build tension and I love how everything ended. The acting was great across the board, which can be tough sticking three characters alone for most of the film. There's not a lot in the way of effects, but it doesn't necessarily need them. It is shot well and the soundtrack fit for what was needed as well. Overall I'd say this is a really good movie and it stuck with me after checking out it. I would recommend this to horror and non-horror fans for sure.

But this is a great film and I am glad I had the privilege of seeing it early at a local film festival. It portrays human cruelty and its ramifications very adeptly. The films does a great job at building tension and making you feel unsettled. The very cramped interiors of all the sets, the doll house, and the whispered prayers add to the eerie atmosphere. Riley Keough gives a great performance, and Alicia Silverstone was great in the opening.
Something's not quite right as the story unfolds, and its not what you think. The film fooled me and I liked that. Another great film from these two directors about bratty children.

Pam wants lots and lots of dinner parties. His former spy group kidnaps married man and holds an intervention. They convince him to go on one last mission, to have closure and get Egan (Max Silvestri) and his plans for a bomb or a laser or something that is bad. Corey has to balance his home life, work, spy work, and bowling while having a fake spy wife (Natasha Bassett) This is a fun film that uses silly spy cliches and has good characters. Not an overpowering film, but good. Guide: F-word. Near sex. • Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

 

• On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

 

• First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.

Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

• Ultimately we were left unconvinced that Cunningham (the dancer) was all that interesting. Fashionable certainly, he's attached to the right people, and I'm sure it would be great to be dancing as him, but the just-over-half-full prime-time-at-the-festival cinema was an endless circuit of yawns.

 

• Nevertheless we feel cultured now.

Aiming to be a kind of Get Out for undocumented day laborers (an unjust comparison if there ever was one), the Max Pachman-directed thriller begins when a group of four such workers are picked up by a seemingly clueless white woman outside of a hardware store. They’re cheap labor and, though they gawk and catcall her in the car on the way to her house, they all come to a mutually beneficial agreement: they’ll work for her on her property for a fraction of the price she was planning to pay a contractor. Soon enough though the four men begin to realize they may have stepped into something much more sinister — their employers are used to making a killing, quite literally, when it comes to flipping houses using undocumented labor. Yes, this is a film wherein Mexicans are kidnapped and terrorized by a racist white couple eager to exploit them and then discard them. It’s no surprise that in the run-up to its release the low-budget thriller has already tried to capitalize on its buzzy premise. Taking a page out of The Hunt  (that movie about rich people hunting poor people that got delayed after earning its fair share of Internet hate last year),  Beneath Us  has been openly courting that kind of controversy. On Twitter, the film’s marketing has been sharing a riff on The Hunt ‘s own provocative poster where instead of sharing positive reviews, they share outraged reactions (“Make white people look bad again, ” “What in the white people? ” “Keeping the division alive”). This is a project that is keen to raise eyebrows; it wants to feed on a collective sense of outrage about what kinds of stories get to make it to the screen. And, more to the point, what real-life horrors deserve the horror film treatment. We’ll raise you one — Beneath Us (@BeneathUsFilm) February 12, 2020 Because make no mistake:  Beneath Us  will feed into whatever political fears you already hold. There’s a discomforting “both sides-ism” running through this sun-dappled horror thriller which deploys its blunt metaphors all too earnestly. As a way to signal that Liz Rhodes (Lynn Collins) is comfortable not just exploiting the day laborers she’s hired but actively loathes their mere existence, Pachman and his co-writer Mark Mavrothalasitis have her dealing with a rat infestation in her kitchen with ultra violent results. At first annoyed by their squeaks, she stomps these critters to death with undue cruelty, as explicit a foreshadowing of what’s to come as it gets. Then again, to even have that brief moment work as a metaphor means equating the likes of Memo (Josue Aguirre), Alejandro (Rigo Sanchez), Hector (Roberto Sanchez) and Tonio (Thomas Chavira) to vermin, which can feel like treading a fine line between an all too facile way of playing into anti-immigrant rhetoric and all-out redeploying it. Similarly, an early moment when Hector quips that “gringos warn their children to stay away from white vans. We’re the only ones who jump into them, ” when talking about what it means for day laborers to blindly trust those who employ them, too glibly underlines the very themes the film is tackling: the constant fear that grip undocumented workers who take such jobs. Later still, they’ll stress again how the fear goes both ways: it takes trust to bring someone to your property; it takes trust to believe you’ll be paid. Courtesy of Vital Pictures. If Beneath Us lacks nuance, it is by design. Collins’ Liz is as cartoonish a villain as you’re likely to find, a hollow monstrous idea of what happens when white Americans fail to see the humanity of those they exploit. Her placid white liberalism hides a disdain for the Other; moreover, she thrives knowing how much power she has over these helpless men whom she’s ready to shoot, stomp and kill as needed. In contrast to her big performance, Aguirre and Sanchez are particularly affecting in their roles, managing to deepen characterizations that feel too thin on the page. On paper, this is all a fascinating premise for a horror movie, especially once the film leans into its slasher-cum-home-invasion genre trappings (expect lots of gore amid claustrophobic scenarios that do make Memo and Alejandro feel like vermin in the eyes of their captors). Overall, though, Beneath Us  coasts on its shocking ideas alone, rarely making what would be a pulse-pounding thriller anything more than fodder for online outrage campaigns. Neither as thought-provoking as it thinks it is, nor as powerful a conversation-starter as it should be, Pachman’s modern-day parable is not likely to change anyone’s mind. One need only look at the YouTube comments under its trailer for proof: the use of “undocumented” in the film’s synopsis is enough to send anti-immigrant rhetoric soaring (you can guess what they wish Memo and the others were called instead) while the very concept of the film can only succeed if and when the likes of Alejandro and Memo are seen as people and not (just) as pawns in horrors both real or imagined. That’s a tall order and one which this much too literal project aims for but fails to land. Beneath Us hits theaters March 6, 2020.

Это лента для тех, кто допускает неспешное раскрытие событий, разбавленное неторопливыми прогулками на фоне пасмурных морских пейзажей. Красота таких кадров заслуживает отдельного внимания. Например, сцены, снятые при дневном свете у подножия скал, напоминают картины. Кажется, что героиня Марианна рисует людей на полотнах, а оператор Клер Матон проделывает то же самое с пленкой. Режиссер Селин Сьямма (выступала сценаристом к мультфильму My Life as a Courgette) совершенно не торопит события, сперва оставляя в сюжете недосказанность и, как может показаться, мистическую загадочность. А после постепенно добавляет беседы, в которых персонажи начинают проявлять себя. Еще одна премия Каннского кинофестиваля (картина «Портрет девушки в огне» также получила «квир-пальму») дает подсказку о том, в каком направлении будет двигаться сюжет. И если первый час фильма все равно оставляет определенную интригу, то во второй половине проявляется мелодрама, которая местами навевает скуку и обозначает предсказуемость концовки. Довольно часто неспешные эпизоды в кино разбавляют инструментальной музыкой, которая мгновенно меняет настроение фильма. Селин Сьямма предпочитает не делать этого, оставив музыкальные вставки исключительно для нескольких сцен, несущих в себе определенный смысл. Она оказывается права. Особенно хорошо работает хоровое пение, мгновенно меняющее настроение в кадре. Излишеств нет не только в музыкальном сопровождении. Художники по костюмам тоже придерживаются минимализма, не отвлекая внимания от характеров главных героинь. Это касается и съемочного реквизита, сведенного до бытового минимума, к тому же подчеркивающего финансовое положение аристократической семьи. Стоит отметить работу актрис Ноэми Мерлан и Адель Энель, которые гармонично вжились в образ своих героинь из XVIII века, не оставив и тени современности в кадре. Действующие лица картины не были вдохновлены реально существовавшими личностями, поэтому у артисток была свобода в создании новых персонажей, что по-своему выделяется на фоне многочисленных байопиков и экранизаций классических произведений. «Портрет девушки в огне» – фильм с кадрами особой красоты. Что касается сюжета, то он развивается настолько неторопливо и порой излишне мелодраматично, что это может оттолкнуть зрителя. Плюсы: актрисы; интересная завязка; операторская работа; музыкальные акценты Минусы: темп фильма очень и очень неспешен Вывод: французская картина для тех, кто никуда не торопится, никого не осуждает и ценит красивые кадры.

Movie Portrait de la jeune fille en europe. This movie reminded me of the basic principles of cinema, of what differentiates it from mere entertainment and makes it art.
It makes everything simple and immensely dense at once. What it does best - the beautiful landscape shots, the sensible dialogue, the nuance with every sigh, every whisper - it seems to do effortlessly. It often doesn't look rehearsed (I think Céline Sciamma even mentioned that she wanted the dialogue to seem improvised) it's filled with silences during which the characters look at each other, they truly look, as if the study prior to painting transcends into reality. At one point it becomes unclear whether Marianne is observing Héloïse because she has to or because she wants to. We see it all happen : slowly at first, and then without restraint, in a commotion. Something blooms in the characters' eyes.
There is an emotional movement in the film that is independent from any medium other than the image. There are no soaring strings to help elevate the emotion. It stays raw, and we can't help but live it with the characters as it is. We are never shielded from reality. Instead, we are forced to keep our feet firmly planted as every scene delightfully unfolds right in front of us. Music appears only twice, otherwise the music is the language, the sound of waves, the sound of breaths, the sound of paintbrush against canvas. The long takes are so steady and delicate, you might not even notice them until the cuts takes you by surprise (this shows how seldom they seem to occur. There is a sense of huis clos in the painting sequences, as if the characters cannot escape one another and, as a result, are almost forced into a slow duel of piercing gazes, biting remarks and heavy silence. Their love is left untamed and vainly restrained, and it soon begins to burn and crackle, and when it finally bursts out, it leaves no one unscathed : the result is a beautiful yet powerful phenomenon, like the waves that roll and crash around the island.
Céline pours such depth in everything she creates and there is so much to be said about this film. I hope she gets rightfully recognized for all she gives to the art of film.

Yes, the plot isn't so "thick" it's a rather slow film.
Why I say this is what cinema should be, is because it has as it's base images. Its images speak louder than word ; you see what you have to know.
Everyone involved with this picture seems to have done an astounding job - may it be through directing, the actresses, the set, the photography, the costumes - everything is astounding and very well done.
When we saw this in theatres with my colleagues - mostly male. we came out speechless. At the end of the film, there was a girl crying in the same row as I - the first time I see anyone crying to a movie (really crying from bing moved. With my colleagues, we walked out, and none of us spoke or said anything for at least 5-10 minutes, as we all obviously were affected by the nostalgic beauty that the picture captures. Finally someone broke the silence with the only thing that could break the spell - a banal exclamation "it was well done" as the only thing to be done after such a film is "a return to banality. This is a film I will gladly see again.
